George Garcia is an education program consultant for the California Department of Education (CDE), serving in the Office of Learning Environments. He leads the California Green Ribbon Schools (CA-GRS) Award program, which recognizes schools for their commitment to sustainability, health, and environmental education.
George has held roles in K–12 education and state government. Past positions include serving as a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) instructional coach in Santa Clara, where he worked directly with administrators, teachers, and students to design and implement innovative, cross-curricular learning experiences.
George serves as the statewide coordinator for the CA-GRS program and partners with schools, districts, and community organizations to advance sustainability in education. He supports schools, districts, and county offices of education across California in adopting eco-conscious practices through the CA-GRS program. His work empowers schools to embrace sustainability initiatives—from energy efficiency and water conservation to outdoor learning and environmental literacy—while celebrating their achievements at the state and national levels. He is driven by the belief that the power of people, working together, creates lasting change. George sees education as a unifying force that can inspire collective action, foster environmental stewardship, and build healthier, more sustainable communities for generations to come.
