Mendocino County Office of Education

After nineteen years as a middle and high school science teacher, Dr. Maia Steward joined the Mendocino County Office of Education (MCOE) as a continuous improvement specialist. In response to educators’ need for support in adjusting to NGSS standards and infusing environmental literacy into their unit planning, Maia founded the annual MCOE Science Retreat for Educators in the Mendocino Redwoods and the STEAM Expo at the Mendocino County Science and Engineering Fair. Maia earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership with a focus on equity through novice teacher training from San Francisco State University in 2016. She continues to mentor teachers and school leaders to improve student agency and academic success, including through environmental stewardship. Maia was also a high school drama teacher for fifteen years and brings her passion for the arts into all her environmental literacy initiatives. Maia looks forward to opening opportunities for students to showcase their talents and agency to be partners in building a world where humans and the planet can thrive.
