Announcing Our First Statewide School Survey

by  CAELI
  • November 15, 2023

What is your experience with environmental-based learning?

Does your school have a garden where your students can feel the touch of the dirt and watch the life cycle of living things in real-time? Have you organized school trips that shifted how students view the world around them? Is your school using sustainable resources to electrify campus? Maybe you have begun using nutrition and cooking classes to deepen student understanding of healthy food choices as well as the science and math of cooking. There are countless ways that schools across California are growing their environmental literacy efforts and supporting their students.

Gathering Insights On the Ground

At the California Environmental Literacy Initiative, our mission is to scale equity-focused environmental literacy programs across California TK-12 schools. This year, we are thrilled to announce that we are releasing our first-ever statewide environmental literacy survey. Our goal with this survey is to hear directly from educators, principals, and site administrators across TK–12 schools in California so we can best address the needs on the ground.

The survey will identify areas of strong achievement, as well as which schools and districts might currently lack access to environment-based learning experiences. The information will be used by school districts and county offices of education to make equity-focused decisions regarding support for student programs, professional learning, and other resources.

We understand to equitably grow environmental learning across California, teachers and administrators must be supported and have the resources they need to succeed. The survey will focus on a few areas to get a fuller picture of the landscape including, but not limited to, the following topics.

  • Student access and proficiency in environmental literacy
  • The needs of teachers
  • Campus health and wellness
  • Curriculum frameworks and partners

We are excited about the potential of this statewide survey to shape the future of Environmental Literacy Education in California. Your input will directly influence decisions that impact the educational experiences of students across the state, helping us create a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future!

How to Participate

Help us get a full picture of the landscape across California by taking our survey if you are eligible and sharing the survey with any California teachers, site administrators, or principals in your life.

Teachers, Principals, and Administrators

As educators and leaders in California TK-12 schools, your voices and perspectives are crucial in helping us understand the current state of Environmental Literacy Education and how we can further enhance our efforts in the future.

We encourage all teachers, administrators, and principals in California to take a few minutes to complete the survey and share it with others in their network. Not only will your input support the educational experiences of students across California, but you also have a chance to win one of four $250 prizes as a token of our appreciation. Thank you in advance for your valuable contribution!

Help Us Spread the Word!

To ensure that we gather as many perspectives as possible, we kindly ask all participants to share this survey with any California teachers, administrators, or principals in their network. The more voices we hear, the better equipped we will be to address the needs of our students and ensure equitable access to environmental literacy.

Thank you in advance for your support and collaboration. Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of our students and the health of our planet.
